CHAPTER 15

“Finally!” Frankie cried as she ran down the stairs. “I thought you two would never get here.”

Levi glanced at his watch. “We’re five minutes early.” Considering their busy morning, the fact that they’d made it on time to pick up Frankie was a minor miracle.

Hope appeared from the kitchen, holding a coffee mug. “She saw that you two went to the beach this morning and was worried you wouldn’t make it back in time.”

Groaning, Levi rubbed the back of his neck. “I think it should be a rule that no one googles me anymore.”

“I didn’t!” Frankie insisted. “But my friend from school texted me. Look.” She shoved her phone into Levi’s face. “Do you think I want to see my brother making out in public? Ewww.”

Silas couldn’t help the laugh that escaped his lips. Frankie was a handful, and he was here for it. Levi needed someone with fire in his life to keep him on his toes.

“We weren’t making out,” Levi said, rolling his eyes.

Hope gave them a skeptical look.

“We weren’t!” Levi insisted, sounding a lot like Frankie in that moment.

Silas cleared his throat. “We obviously had no idea that photographers were around.”

“Obviously,” Hope said dryly. “Anyone need coffee?”

“Yes,” Silas and Levi said at the same time.

She nodded and walked back into the kitchen. Levi followed with Silas behind him.

Once they were both holding their mugs, Hope looked at Levi and then Silas. “Want to tell me what’s going on?”

Levi clamped his lips together and shook his head, unwilling to discuss this with his sister, especially with Silas in the room. What was she thinking?

Silas, on the other hand, didn’t have any issues. “We were practicing the payoff scene last night and I think it’s fair to say that some old feelings have been brought to the surface. That’s all. There’s nothing more than that to report.”

Levi turned and gave him a what-the-hell look.

Silas just shrugged. “It’s the truth, right?”

“Yeah, but…” Levi squeezed his eyes closed and shook his head before turning to face his sister. “Can we not talk about this now?”

“Sure,” she said with a soft chuckle. “It’s just that I don’t get to interrogate you anymore since you’re never here. I missed it.” She winked and then handed him a brown paper bag. “Coffee cake to go with your cup of joe.”

“I both hate and adore you.” Levi bent down and kissed her on her cheek. “Are you going to make it to the talent show today?”

“Chad and I will be there with bells on,” she said, grinning past him at Frankie, who’d just walked in.

“Please. Nooooo,” Frankie whined. “You’re too embarrassing.”

“I’m embarrassing?” Hope asked, pretending to be offended. “You wound me.” She clutched her hand over her heart and acted like she was weak in the knees. “Maybe no bells. Just party favors then.”

Frankie rolled her eyes and retreated from the kitchen, muttering something about how old people just didn’t understand anything.

Silas let out a bark of laughter. “Never a dull moment with that one.
